Yuki Saito Spring Camp News and Notes: February 19, 2011

by on Feb.19, 2011 @ 12:00 pm, under NPB

This post will be updated with information as it becomes available so keep checking back if you have any interest in Yuki Saito.

===== 2/19 @ 5:23pm

Saito's start against the Yakult Swallows tomorrow has been canceled due to stomach pains.  Saito started having pains in his stomach last night.  When things didn't improve today, the team decided to send him to the hospital for an examination.  It doesn't appear to be a serious condition, but he will require some rest.

Saito wanted to leave tomorrow's start open, but Masataka Nashida went ahead and canceled the start.

It also seems that part of the reason why Saito only threw 19 pitches in the bullpen today was due to the stomach pains.

Saito threw 19 pitches in the bullpen today (nice and easy).

The media learned yesterday that Saito's third appearance of the spring will likely be during an exhibition game against the Chiba Lotte Marines (at Nago) on the 26th.  Saito's first appearance came on the 13th (vs Samsung) and his second will be on the 20th (vs Yakult).  Assuming the Fighters keep Saito on a schedule of pitching on 6-days of rest, his third start would come on the 27th (vs Rakuten at Nago). But the Fighters are also scheduled to leave Nago that night.  And if Saito pitches, he'll probably draw a lot of fans and that will likely lead to a lot of car traffic.  In order to avoid any potential delays in their departure from Nago, the team most likely won't pitch Saito on the 27th, which means the 26th is a good possibility.

Real Japan Pro Wrestling recently held a charity auction.  A Saito autographed ball was auctioned off for 50,000 yen (had a start price of 5,000 yen).  Amongst the other baseball memorabilia that were also auctioned off: a Yu Darvish ball went for 15,000 yen and a Shigeo Nagashima autographed bat and board went for 70,000 yen.
