2/22/2011: Hideki Matsui, Ichiro Suzuki, Tsuyoshi Nishioka

by on Feb.22, 2011 @ 11:27 am, under MLB

Hideki Matsui worked out for about 3 hours on the first day of Spring Training on the 21st (which included OF fielding practice and 63 swings during BP).

===

Ichiro Suzuki stood in the batter's box against 3 different pitchers on the 21st and saw 30 pitches (no swinging).  When asked if the exercise was good for training the eye, Ichiro said that it was probably more for the pitchers than the batters.

Practice yesterday also included a 1-hour yoga session with a female instructor -- seems it's a part of the team's training program for the next week.

===

Tsuyoshi Nishioka kept his workouts light on the 21st.  Nishioka told reporters that he was really excited about playing in the Majors.  And it seems Ron Gardenhire will allow Nishioka to do his own thing since he has a proven track record in Japan.

Hideki Okajima threw 20 pitches during BP on the 21st.  He is currently scheduled to toss BP again on the 24th before making an appearance in an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins on the 27th.

===

Koji Uehara threw 28 pitches to live batters (no swinging) on the 21st.  Uehara is scheduled to toss BP on the 23rd.

===

Itsuki Shoda started up his workouts (which included about 15 minutes of catch) on the 21st after having just arrived from Japan the day before.

===

Kosuke Fukudome took extra BP in the morning on the 21st.  It was the third time in as many days he arrived at practice early in order to get in some extra swings.  Fukudome also told reporters that he didn't like taking BP in the cages very much because it didn't really help him with his rhythm because pitches are thrown at set intervals.

===

Takashi Saito threw 42 pitches in the bullpen on the 21st.  He told reporters he's scheduled to throw BP on the 23rd.
