Chunichi Dragons Spring Camp News and Notes: February 23, 2011

This post will be updated throughout the day.

Today's practice game against the LG Twins:

The Twins beat the Dragons, 2-1.

Shinji Iwata did not allow a run over an inning of work.  He also gave up a hit and struck out 2.

Ryuya Ogawa was the 4th pitcher on record and gave up 2 runs over 3 innings.

Joel Guzman started at first and batted 4th.  He hit a solo homer to right-center in the 4th inning, his second in as many games.

Yesterday's game against the Hanwha Eagles:

Felix Carrasco started at first and batted 3rd.  He went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

===== 4/24 @ 1:55am

After the game, Ryuya Ogawa threw 149 pitches in the bullpen.

Felix Carrasco is 5-for-12 over 3 practice games.

Yoshimi is hoping to return to the active roster by mid-April.  Before his 22-pitch bullpen session, he also did some long-distance throwing (about 80 meters).  Assuming he doesn't hit any roadblocks, he could toss a bullpen session with a squatting catcher on Thursday (2/24).

===== 4/23 @ 1:43pm

Kazuki Yoshimi (working his way back from right elbow surgery) threw 22 pitches to a standing catcher in the bullpen today.  This was Yoshimi's third bullpen session (all with a standing catcher) this spring.

Before hitting a 2-run homer in yesterday's practice game against the Hanwha Eagles, Joel Guzman had gone 11 straight plate appearances with out a hit.  That one shot may have jostled something since he ended up going 2-for-3 with 4 RBI (2 sac flies).

And while Tony Blanco has been working out in right field during spring camp, there's a good chance the two players might end up competing against each other for the starting first base job.  Unless of course Blanco sees some improvement in his fielding abilities in right before the start of the regular season.
