2/25/2011: Ichiro Suzuki, Hideki Matsui, Koji Uehara

by on Feb.25, 2011 @ 11:20 am, under MLB

Ichiro Suzuki spent about 20 minutes before practice working indoors by himself on his swing.  He also stayed back after practice for extra BP.  That's in addition to about 3 hours of practice with the full squad.

During regular BP, Ichiro took 66 swings and hit 11 over the fence.

UPDATE @ 8:37pm - Miyazaki prefecture announced today that they received a 10M yen donation from Ichiro (via the Furusato Tax Relief Donation System).  The donation was dated the 21st and included a note that said he hoped the money could be used for volcanic activity and bird flu relief efforts.

Hideki Matsui was the starting DH and batted 5th in an intra-squad game on the 24th.  He hit an RBI single to center in his first AB in the 1st inning with runners on first and second and 1 out.  After the game, he swung the bat over 100 times during soft-toss BP.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka will most likely be playing in an exhibition game against the Red Sox on 2/27.

===

Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima both made appearances as BP pitchers on the 24th -- Matsuzaka threw 31 pitches and Okajima 20.  As of now, Okajima is scheduled to pitch during an exhibition game on the 27th and Matsuzaka on the 28th.

Junichi Tazawa will continue his rehab training at the minor league facilities beginning on the 26th.  Seems the Red Sox would like Tazawa to work 1-on-1 with a specialized trainer.

===

Koji Uehara is slated to make an appearance during an exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates  on 2/28  (the team's first exhibition game).  Prior to practice on the 24th, Frank Robinson gave a lecture to the players.

Yoshinori Tateyama made an appearance during an intra-squad game on the 24th.  He entered the game in the 4th inning and gave up a homer to the first batter he faced.  But he settled down after that by keeping the ball down in zone: ground out to the pitcher, strikeout looking, strikeout swinging.  Of the 10 pitches Tateyama threw, only 1 was a ball.
