Yuki Saito Preseason News and Notes: February 26, 2011

Saito entered the game in the 6th and tossed a shutout inning in relief.  He threw a total 19 pitches and allowed 1 hit.

Inning Recap

6th inning

Kiyota Ikuhiro - fouled out to first on a 1-0 fastball.

Shoitsu Omatsu - walked on a 3-2 fastball (9 pitches).

Naotaka Takehara - doubled on a 2-1 fastball; runners on second and third.

Kei Hosoya - grounded out to third; runner thrown out at home.

Takeshi Kanazawa - fouled out to third on a 2-0 fastball.


The media learned that the Fighters are planning on using Saito as a starter this year.  He pitched in relief today (vs LOT) and will pitch in relief on 3/2 (vs YAK) and 3/6 (vs YOM), but will be used as a starter thereafter.

The Fighters original plan included having Saito make appearances as both a starter and reliever.


Saito told reporters that he managed to accomplish about 90% of the things he set out to do.


The Fighters drew 27,650 fans during spring camp (20 days).


Yu Darvish's comments on Saito:

I was able to see the man behind the mask, the real [Saito].  I figured out what kind of guy he is.  And I think he's done a good job mixing in with the team.
