PL News and Notes: Shunta Goto has a chance to win starting RF job

by on Mar.04, 2011 @ 7:06 pm, under NPB

Seibu Lions

Hideto Asamura is currently 8-for-17 with 2 homers during exhibition game playHisanobu Watanabe told reporters yesterday that first base was still up for grabs and that Asamura had a chance to win the starting job.  That would most likely move Jose Fernandez to DH.

Watanabe also started Hiroyuki Nakajima at third yesterday.  Regarding that move, the manager told reporters he wanted his players to be able to play multiple positions (could also have something to do with the possibility of Nakajima leaving after the 2011 season, i.e., what would things be like if he's not at short).

Chiba Lotte Marines

Yuki Karakawa was working on two things: control of his shuto and staying away from big innings early on (he also changed his pre-game routines like increasing the number of pitches he throws in the bullpen from 30 to 42; and running more sprints).

Nippon Ham Fighters

Yuki Saito (1st round) threw 51 pitches in the bullpen today in preparation for an upcoming relief appearance in an exhibition game against the Yomiuri Giants on the 6th.  His workouts also included playing some catch and some running.

Sho Nakata has hit 7 homers in 14 spring games (including practice and exhibition games).

Orix Buffaloes

Akinobu Okada told reporters that he still had two openings: RF and catcher.  From the sounds of things, it seems he's also willing to give Shunta Goto (1st round) a chance to win the starting RF job.

Shunta, Hayato Terahara, Masaki Ihara, and Yuki Nishi worked out at Hotto Motto Stadium today (mandatory practice the four players).

Rakuten Eagles

Hisasahi Iwakuma is scheduled to start an exhibition game tomorrow against the Seibu Lions.  He did not toss a bullpen session today and instead did other things like played some catch and did some running.

Head / batting coach Koichi Tabuchi joking told reporters that he'd like to make Daisuke Kusano the object of his anger since it didn't seem to bother him that much.
