As of now, it seems Joel Guzman may have won the starting RF job. And with Kazuhiro Wada a fixture in left, that leaves center as the only opening in the Dragons' outfield. Atsushi Fujii, Yohei Oshima, and Ryosuke Hirata are three possible candidates.
Shun Tono was surprised to see the snow at Giants Stadium today and jokingly told reporters he almost thought he was still in Hokkaido.
Hirokazu Sawamura (1st round) threw 111 pitches in the bullpen at Giants Stadium on Sunday (the most he's thrown this year).
Ryota Wada (Ikusei 1st round), Takao Zaizen (Ikusei 5th round), and Hiroto Kawaguchi (Ikusei 7th round) all stayed back after practice on Sunday, spending most of their time working on their throws during extra fielding practice. Seems Ikusei coach Kazuaki Ueda is advising Ikusei players to spend extra time practicing in order to catch up to the regular players. The Ni-gun roster has the day off yesterday, but these three will most likely spend parts of it working out.
Kenta Maeda threw all his pitches during his start yesterday against the Chiba Lotte Marines.
Maeda - "I threw all my pitches today, including my slider. This is probably how it'll be during the season. The batters had a hard time getting their timing down and were fouling balls off. They didn't really have any good swings of the bat, so that's good."
Maeda is expected to make two more starts before the start of the regular season -- on the 12th against Softbank at Mazda Stadium and on the 19th against Orix at Kyoto.
FYI: Maeda has the kanji characters 責任 (or responsibility) written under the brim of his cap.
Chad Tracy's family is due to arrive in Japan tomorrow (wife and two daughters).
