Anyone know if Mike Hessman is in Okada’s doghouse? With 2 outs and the tying run at the plate. Okada batted Moriyama a weak hitter with no power. Why didn’t he use Hessman who could have tied the game with one swing? Hessman didn’t even play in the opening series.

I haven’t heard or read anything about any problems between Hessman and Okada. It’s possible Okada was just playing the percentages — Falkenborg was on the mound and maybe he felt more comfortable sending Moriyama up because he’s a left-handed bat. Last year, Moriyama went 36-for-98 (.367) against right-handed pitchers so maybe Okada was thinking about sending up a good contact hitter vs a batter that could also strike out.

I can’t say that it was an awful move. Now, if this were mid-season and Hessman was sitting on the bench despite showing good power (up to that point), then I think there might be problem, but this early in the season, with a batter that hasn’t had much time facing NPB pitchers yet (it probably hurts that he missed time after getting hit in the head), I really don’t think it was an awful decision not to bat him there.
