PL News and Notes: Nobuhiko Matsunaka taken off active roster with thumb injury

by on May.01, 2011 @ 11:58 pm, under NPB

Softbank Hawks

Seiichi Uchikawa went 3-for-3 today against the Chiba Lotte Marines and now has 4 modasho's (3 or more hits in a game) / 9 multi-hit games so far this year.  He has only been held hitless in 2 out of his team's 16 games this year.

Nobuhiko Matsunaka was taken off the active roster today due to a left thumb injury.  Matsunaka was hit by a pitch during pre-game BP on 4/23 (vs Lotte at Kagoshima) and was taking things day-by-day.  According to Koji Akiyama, it isn't so much pain, but rather the swelling that has been giving Matsunaka problems.

Matsunaka returned to Fukuoka today and is scheduled to get the thumb checked out tomorrow.

Rakuten Eagles

Akinori Iwamura was yanked early from today's game because he wasn't having a very good day -- he committed a big error at third in the 3rd inning and went 0-for-1 (walk, strikeout) at the plate.  This was the second time this season Iwamura was yanked from a game early.

Takahiro Shiomi may get his first regular season start on 5/5 (vs Softbank at Yahoo Dome).  He'll more or less be taking Koji Aoyama's turn in the rotation, now that Aoyama is pitching out of the bullpen.
