Akinobu Mayumi tried mixing the line-up around today and benched Takashi Toritani, Tomoaki Kanemoto, and Craig Brazell. The changes didn't make a difference though as the Tigers were shutout again, for the third time in as many games, and have not scored a run in 32 consecutive innings. The last time the Tigers were shutout three games in a row: 4/13 - 4/15/2001.
Incidentally, Toritani's consecutive games streak (now at 920 games) is still alive since he got a pinch-hit at bat in the 9th.
Takashi Toritani started throwing today for the first time his right index finger injury. During pre-game practice, Toritani lightly threw the ball at a distance of about 15 meters. He also tried throwing the ball between second and first. Said Toritani, "It isn't as if there isn't any pain, but we'll see how things go."
Injury update: Yoshinobu Takahashi (fractured ribs) worked out at Giants Stadium today. His workouts today included some running (30 meter dashes), hitting in the cages, and various other strength training exercises. Takahashi's workouts will slowly increase in intensity after the weekend. ... Michihiro Ogasawara (left calf) played some catch and took soft toss BP using just his right hand today. Ogasawara told reporters that he was still in the process of checking to see how his calf was holding up.
Josh Whitesell had himself a Golden Sombrero (struck out 4 times) last night. But it was a tough night all around for the Swallows' offense: Norichika Aoki, Wladimir Balentien, Yasushi Iihara, and Yuichi each struck out twice; three other batters struck out once.
Jun Hirose got an MRI on his right hamstring today and was diagnosed with an injury in his right biceps femoris muscle that will require 4 weeks of treatment.
