CL News and Notes: Yomiuri Giants still looking for their first complete game of the year

by on May.26, 2011 @ 11:50 am, under NPB

Hanshin Tigers

The Tigers are 6-12 in May so far.  With only 4 more games left remaining this month, the best the Tigers can do is a 10-12 record.

Takahiro Arai is currently 38-for-127 (.299) on the year.  Not too shabby, but take a look at the lefty-right splits: 30-for-83 (.361) vs right-handed pitching and 8-for-44 (.182) vs left-handed pitching.

Tomoaki Kanemoto spent about 40 minutes practicing his swing in the "swing room" after last night's game.

===

Injury update: Takashi Toritani took fielding practice at short yesterday and also started making throws to first base (10 throws).  The Tigers are currently eying the 28th as a possible date for his return to the starting line-up.

Yomiuri Giants

The Giants tied a franchise record of 33 consecutive games to start the season without a complete game.

The offense is also sputtering: it has only managed to score 1 run in 4 of their last 5 games.  And of the 33 games they have played this year, they've been held to a 1 run or less 10 times.

===

The Giants have not hit a homer at Tokyo Dome since 5/5 (vs Hanshin).  That's a span of 5 games.  The last time they went 5 games without a homer at Tokyo Dome: August 1995.

Injury updates: Yoshinobu Takahashi took BP in the cages at Giants Stadium yesteryday.  He also took 62 swings during BP off Ikusei coach Kazuaki Ueda, soft toss BP, and fielding practice. ... Michihiro Ogasawara worked out for about 2 hours yesterday.  His workouts included some running; playing catch outdoors (about 40 meters); taking some soft toss BP using his right hand; and working on his bunts.

Yakult Swallows

The Swallows are 0-5-1 since their last victory on 5/17.  Part of the reason is the offense: it has only scored 5 runs during the 6-game stretch.
