Nippon Ham Fighters: Yu Darvish making it look easy

by on Jun.09, 2011 @ 12:07 am, under NPB

Can a pitcher be any more dominant than Yu Darvish right now?

Darvish tossed his third straight complete game shutout victory tonight, tying a PL record that has been accomplished 8 times by 7 other pitchers (including Orix's Chihiro Kaneko last year).  He also hasn't allowed a run in 44 consecutive inning -- that breaks the franchise record of 35 scoreless innings set by Yasuo Yonekawa in 1954; and the 39 consecutive scoreless innings set by Kazuhisa Inao (Nishitetsu) in 1959 (which puts Darvish's current streak as the second longest in the PL).

The PL record of 54.2 consecutive scoreless innings set by Tadashi Sugiura (Nankai) in 1959; and the NPB record of 64.1 consecutive scoreless innings set by Masaichi Kaneda (Kokutetsu) in 1958.

Also of note: Darvish may be one of 11 players in Pro Yakyu history to record 44 or more consecutive scoreless innings, but he's the only pitcher to do it while also registering a K/9 of over 10 (10.02) and a BB+HBP/9 under 1 (0.61).

Darvish also tied his domestic radar gun record of 156km/h.
