PL News and Notes: Shoitsu Omatsu (LOT) knocks out Pacific League’s 1,000th grand slam

by on Jun.12, 2011 @ 6:58 am, under NPB

Softbank Hawks

Toshiya Sugiuchi won his start yesterday (4-1 over Yakult; 7 IP, 2 H, 6 SO, 1 R, 1 ER) and is now just 1 win away from 100 and 6 strikeouts away from 1,500.

Seibu Lions

It seems there's  good chance Yusei Kikuchi will get today's start against the Hanshin Tigers.

Chiba Lotte Marines

Shoitsu Omatsu hit his 6th career grand slam last night.  It also happened to the 1,000th grand slam hit in the PL.  Omatsu also recorded the Marines 7,000th franchise home run last year on 8/28 (vs Softbank).

FYI: There have been 989 grand slams in the CL and 82 before the two-league system.  That's a total 2,071 grand slams between the three leagues.

Nippon Ham Fighters

The Fighters have won their last 3 games by a difference of one run.  The last time they did that was back in 1998 (6/20 - 6/23).  And while the Fighters are 3-4 in 1-run games against Pacific League teams, they're 6-1 during Inter-league play.

Orix Buffaloes

Yuki Nishi was supposed to get yesterday's start against the Yomiuri Giants but didn't because he hasn't been feeling well.  And it seems it's bad enough that he'll be taken off the active roster today.

Rakuten Eagles

Takeshi Yamasaki hit his 398th career homer yesterday against the Chunichi Dragons.  He now also has 100 homers since 2008, the year he turned 40.  That's second only to Hiromitsu Kadota's 133.
