PL News and Notes: Chihiro Kaneko (ORI) to start without pitch limits

by on Jun.22, 2011 @ 6:02 pm, under NPB

Softbank Hawks

Toshiya Sugiuchi feels he doesn't need to rely on his curve and that three pitches (ideally) are enough (fastball, slider, and change).  Part of that has to do with the fact that he throws 3 kinds of sliders, one of which has movement similar to a curve.

The Hawks are thinking about setting up some sort of tournament for their San-gun playersItaru Kobayashi (director of player development) told reporters that they were thinking about getting local universities and Independent League teams involved.

Owner Masayoshi Son will be attending the Hawks vs Rakuten Eagles game at Tokyo Dome on the 28th.  And about 8,000 Softbank employees will be joining him.

The Hawks handed out the latest iPad2 to all their players today.

A crow was apparently stuck in Yahoo Dome.  In order to get rid of it, dome operators opened up the roof and waited until it flew out.  It costs about 1M yen in electricity just to open and close the roof once.

Chiba Lotte Marines

Team president Ryuzo Setoyama told reporters yesterday he wouldn't mind Shota Ishimine became the "new face" of the team.  An unnamed club rep added that were getting a lot of interview requests for Ishimine and that his merchandise was selling well.

According to Sponichi, the Marines need focus on three things when they face Yuki Saito (HAM): lay off the low pitches out of the zone; zero in on off-speed pitches up in the zone; the batters need to set the rhythm, not Saito.

Nippon Ham Fighters

Yuki Saito spent about 2 hours working out at Kamagaya today (lots of running).  When asked about how he was feeling a day after his start, he said he felt fine and that everything was normal.

Orix Buffaloes

The Buffaloes had set a soft limit of 100 pitches for Chihiro Kaneko during his Inter-league starts.  That limit will be removed when play resumes on Friday.

Akinobu Okada wants another lefty starter.  As of now, Shinya Nakayama is the only lefty in the rotation.  Masaki Ihara is an option, but Okada still isn't convinced he's ready to start at Ichi-gun.
