CL News and Notes: Yoshinori Sato (YAK) likely to return in mid to late July

by on Jun.28, 2011 @ 10:47 am, under NPB

Chunichi Dragons

Junki Ito and Shinji Iwata joined the Ichi-gun team for practice at Yokohama Stadium yesterday.

Hanshin Tigers

Jason Standridge will be looking to become the first foreign Hanshin starter to record back-to-back shutouts since Gene Bacque in July, 1968.  The last Japanese Hashin pitcher to toss back-to-back shutouts: Toshiro Yufune in 1992.

Naoto Tsuru could start tomorrow's game against the Hiroshima Carp -- he joined the Ichi-gun team for practice on the 26th and had the day off yesterday (since he'd be making the start on 5 days of rest).

Team owner Shiniya Sakai told reporters yesterday that he might try to attend the scout meetings the team will be holding during the Summer Koshien this year.  Seems he wants to learn more about why certain players make or don't make the their list of prospects.

Yomiuri Giants

Seth Greisinger and Micheal Nakamura will be added to the active roster today.

Yakult Swallows

Rookie Yuki Shichijo will be making his debut tonight against the Yomiuri Giants.  The last rookie pitcher in franchise history to make their debut against the Giants: Makoto Fujiwara on 4/12/1969 (in relief).  There have been no rookie Yakult starters to make their debut against the Giants.

Junji Ogawa told reporters yesterday that he thought Yoshinori Sato could be activated sometime towards the tale end of their 9-game stretch in July (7/12-7/20) or for the actual All-Star game itself (7/22-7/24).

Josh Whitesell had his left ankle examined yesterday and was diagnosed with a minor sprain.  He's essentially day-to-day.

The Swallows worked out for about 2 hours at Koriyama Kaiseizan Baseball Stadium yesterday in preparation for their 3-game series against the Yomiuri Giants (2 games in Koriyama and 1 game at Tokyo Dome).  Rookie Yuki Shichijo also took part in the practices.

Yokohama Bay Stars

Luis Gonzalez participated in Ichi-gun practices at Yokohama Stadium yesterday (which included playing catch and running).  He will probably pitch during the team's upcoming 3-game series (6/28-6/30) against the Chunichi Dragons (at Yokohama).
