Takashi Toritani and Takahiro Arai are both scheduled to earn their domestic FA options on 9/3. The media learned yesterday that the Tigers will approach either player early.
The Tigers started up their practices at Koshien Stadium yesterday. Work outs lasted about 2 hours and included running, playing catch, and taking BP.
Tomoyuki Kubota threw 33 pitches in the bullpen at Naruohama yesterday.
Issei Morita, Yamato, and Wei-Chu Lin joined the Ichi-gun players for practice yesterday.
Takumi Akiyama, Kazuya Tsutsui, and Tatsuya Kojima will be given a look during situational BP today.
Satoshi Fukuda worked out with the Ichi-gun players yesterday at Giants Stadium and threw 46 pitches in the bullpen.
The Giants could turn to Carlos Torres, Hideki Asai, or Fukuda for the 5 and 6 slots in their rotation, behind Tetsuya Utsumi, Hirokazu Sawamura, Kentaro Nishimura, and Dicky Gonzalez.
Akihiro Higashide (left hamstring) took BP and fielding practice yesterday and could be ready to return to the starting line-up on the 26th. Higashide hurt his left hamstring on the 15th and was working out separately from the rest of the team until yesterday.
Jun Hirose (right hamstring) could return to the active roster as early as 8/2 (vs Yokohama @ Yokohama). But that will probably be dependent on how he does during a couple of Ni-gun games against Orix on 7/30 and 7/31.
Hirose also had a recurrence of pain in his hamstring about a week ago, but managed to return to practicing with the Ni-gun players yesterday.
Yokohama Bay Stars
Brent Leach tossed situational BP at Bay Stars Stadium yesterday. He faced 18 batters (including Terrmel Sledge, Norihiro Nakamura, and Takehiro Ishikawa) and gave up 4 hits while striking out 4. Leach later told reporters that he had good command over his fastball, cutter, and change but struggled with his curve.
