Was at the game tonight. Good effort by Yokohama for sure, but something struck me as odd.

Here’s a video of Ejiri’s delivery. I’m not sure if there’s a runner on in this vid, but he has this exact mechanic with runners aboard.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUPTdRW-et0

On the second pitch, he clearly transfers the ball from his pitching hand to his glove while standing on the rubber. He does this every time he delivers, and I noticed it right away. Isn’t this a balk?

What part of the rule do you think that violates?

He is not doing it during his pitching motion. He does it before going on the set. You can do your thing before going on the set.

    From Wikipedia:

“…after bringing his hands together on the rubber, separates them except in making a pitch or a throw;”

I was always taught that you can’t bring your hands together and pull them apart, even befor you come set. Perfectly willing to accept that I’m wrong on this, I was never a pitcher… just struck me as weird.

That part refers to 8.05(j) of the MLB Official Baseball Rules. It says:

“The pitcher, after coming to a legal pitching position, removes one hand from the ball other than in an actual pitch, or in throwing to a base.”

I think your rule of thumb is to avoid anal umpires.
