PL News and Notes: Rakuten Eagles begin 13-game stretch; starters to pitch on 5 days of rest

Seibu Lions

Ryan Mulhern could make his Ichi-gun debut as early as the 5th (vs Softbank at Seibu Dome), dependent on how well he does during a 3-game series against Ni-gun Yomiuri that begins today.

Hisanobu Watanabe told Kazuhisa Makita not to worry about using his sped up delivery during games.  Makita made some headlines back on 5/6 when he used his sped up motion against Takeshi Yamasaki (RAK) and struck him out (depending on the source, Yamasaki apparently didn't like the idea of a rookie trying to trick batters).

Nippon Ham Fighters

Masao Kida will probably be added to the active roster today -- he traveled up to Sapporo after workouts at Kamagaya yesterday.  He could be used primarily out of the bullpen.

Yu Darvish and Sho Nakata will be appearing in a 15 second TV commercial (limited to areas in Hokkaido) promoting the Fighters' upcoming Summer Festival (Summer Festa) that will be taking place during a three game series against the Softbank Hawks (8/12-8/14).

Rakuten Eagles

The Eagles begin a 13-game stretch today (Seibu x 3, Nippon Ham x 4, Orix x 3, Lotte x 3).

Senichi Hoshino told reporters yesterday that he didn't want his pitchers doing any throwing in between innings during games.

"[Playing catch] only makes them tired and there's really no need for it," said Hoshino.  "If it were still early, that's another story, but we're at a stretch in the summer where players are starting to feel fatigued.  You don't see MLB pitchers playing catch."

Hoshino will also probably start pitchers on 5 days of rest during the team's 13-game stretch.

And it seems Hoshino isn't too concerned about Hisashi Iwakuma starting on 5 days of rest, or even 4...

"Iwakuma?  I told him to come back when he was 100%.  It took some time for him to get back, but we really need him to step up," said Hoshino.  He then added, "If this were the CL, he'd be batting and pitching of 5 days of rest.  If he has aspirations to pitch in the Majors, then even on 4 days or rest.  And at about 100 pitches."

In response to reporters asking Iwakuma about pitching on 5 days of rest, he replied, "5 days?  That's something we'll need to discuss."

Teppei was taken off the active roster yesterday due to his struggles at the plate.  His numbers from July:

20 G, 12-for-67, 4 R, 13 TB, 3 RBI, 10 SO, 6 BB, .179/.243/.194

Toshiya Nakashima will probably be called up today in order to take Teppei's spot on the roster.
