Kenji Jojima had surgery to clean out his left knee today, pretty much ending his attempt at a comeback this season.
The Tigers released the following statement, prepared by Jojima, to the media:
I'm am extremely sorry to create a distraction while the team is making a push for the playoffs. I really wanted to help the team out this season, but I decided I wouldn't be able to make it back 100% as the type of catcher [Akinobu] Mayumi demands. After listening to doctors in the US and Japan, I decided that surgery was the best option. And since I have selected surgery, I will do my best to return as Jojima the catcher as soon as possible.
And regarding his right elbow, the team has decided to shut Jojima down for 8 weeks (no throwing).
UPDATE 8/18 @ 11:30pm - Jojima was released from the hospital today. He'll rest for the next 2 weeks before beginning his rehab in early September.
