CL News and Notes: Wei-Ying Chen (CHU) loses perfect game bid in 8th

by on Aug.18, 2011 @ 12:47 am, under NPB

Chunichi Dragons

Wei-Ying Chen had a perfect game going until Michihiro Ogasawara hit a 3-2 slider (8-pitch at bat) into center with 1 out in the top of the 8th.

Hanshin Tigers

Tomoaki Kanemoto connected for his 464th career homer during a game against the Hiroshima Carp tonight.  That's good for a 12th place tie with Tuffy Rhodes on the All-time list.  He now also has 4,303 total bases, good for sole possession of 8th on the All-time list.

Kyuji Fujikawa was replaced mid-inning on Tuesday night for the first time since he became the team's full-time closer in 2007.

Shinjiro Hiyama collected his 129th pitch-hit hit Tuesday night and moved into sole possession of 4th on the CL's All-time list.

Yakult Swallows

Wladimir Balentien hit another home run tonight and now had 3 in as many games and 4 in his last 5 games.

Had the Swallows managed to pull off a comeback tonight after being down 9 runs, they would have become just the third team in CL history to make it back from such a large deficit.

The Swallows will be hosting Urasoe Day on 8/23.

Hiroshima Carp

Dennis Sarfate became the first pitcher in either league to record 30 saves this season.

The Ni-gun Carp managed to stop their losing streak at 16 games by beating Chunichi today, 5-4.

Yokohama Bay Stars

Yokohama fans weren't too happy about the team not winning after scoring 8 runs in the top of the 1st.  Some were heard shouting for Takao Obana to quit while others shouted he should be fired.

The NPB Commissioner's Office issued Ni-gun OF / base-running coach Jun Inoue a 100,000 yen fine and a stern warning today for being ejected from a Ni-gun game against Lotte on Tuesday.  Inoue was ejected for coming into contact with an umpire.

Inoue was upset about an out call that came in the 6th inning and while arguing with the call, came into contact with the ump.
