CL News and Notes: Shohei Tateyama (YAK) gets scratched from a Ni-gun start

Hanshin Tigers

Takashi Toritani made two nice defensive plays in the bottom of the 9th last night against the Chunichi Dragons: Yohei Oshima's pop fly to shallow short with runners on first and second and 1 out; and Tony Blanco's pop fly to deep short / shallow left-center with the bases loaded and 2 out (the outfielders were playing deep to cut-off the extra base hit).

Shinjiro Hiyama collected his 131st pinch-hit hit last night and moved in a third place tie with Yonetoshi Kawamata on the CL All-time list.  He also picked up his 91st pinch-hit RBI.

Craig Brazell started his outdoor workouts yesterday and included playing catch and some light running.  He also did some indoor BP (40 soft-toss pitches).  As of now, the Tigers still have no timetable on his return.

Yomiuri Giants

Hayato Sakamoto, as part of Red Bull's Under My Wing program, will be holding a baseball clinic for kids during the off-season.

Yakult Swallows

Shohei Tateyama was scratched from a Ni-gun start against Yomiuri yesterday due to continued blood flow problems in his fingers.

Tateyama tried throwing his first bullpen session since coming off the active roster on the 27th, but had to stop after about 20 pitches.  And instead of starting a game yesterday, he threw about 60 pitches in the bullpen and spent some time lifting some weights.  The team still does not have a timetable for Tateyama's return.

Junji Ogawa received an iPad 2 from the media for his birthday yesterday.

The Swallows announced on Tuesday that they'll be hosting a ZETT Baseball Festival on 9/4 (vs Yomiuri).

Hiroshima Carp

Kenta Kurihara continues his hot-hitting against the Yakult Swallows.  In 15 games so far this year: 20-for-55, 30 TB, 15 RBI, 6 BB, .364/.413/.545.

He's also having one of his best months of the year: 25 G, 27-for-95, 58 TB, 24 RBI, .284/.333/.611.
