The NPB has relied on Dentsu to handle all their baseball statistics using computers since 1989. Dentsu has also handled the dispersal of data to various news organizations. But the NPB has plans of implementing a new system for handling data beginning in 2013 and requested that their outsourcing contract be canceled after the 2012 season.
Dentsu's response was that they could not cancel the contract after the 2012 season (they don't do one-year contracts) and instead asked for a 3-year deal (through to the 2014 season) when their computer leasing deal is also scheduled to end.
The NPB is asking the Tokyo District Court to have Dentsu continue to collect and store data for the 2012 season.
