Masahiro Tanaka (RAK) crashes into bicyclist at crossroads

by on Dec.15, 2011 @ 9:23 pm, under NPB

The news sites (Sanspo, Nikkan Sports, Daily Sports to name a few) are reporting that Masahiro Tanaka was involved in a car accident that left a 56-year-old woman with a fractured hipbone.

According to the reports, at around 11:50am on 12/14 on a road in Miyagino Ward, Sendai, Tanaka was driving his car through a crossroads when he collided, from the right side, with a 56-year-old woman riding a bicycle.  There were no stoplights at the crossroads and Tanaka was on his way to practice.

The woman was hospitalized and will require surgery; no timetable has been set for her full recovery.  Tanaka was fine but his car did suffer some damage.

The Rakuten Eagles confirmed with police that it was not an accident related to drinking or mobile phone use and determined it was a matter of careless driving.  They issued Tanaka a severe warning and asked him not to drive for three months.

UPDATE 12/16 @ 3:17pm - Tanaka posted an apology at his blog on Thursday.  He also tweeted an apology as well.

Tanaka is scheduled to make appearance at a number of events before the end of the year and will sit down with organizers to decide what he should do (although it seems he wants to keep a low profile at this point).

Ironically, Tanaka was also featured on a road safety poster in Tokyo between 12/1 and 12/7.
