According to Sponichi, Yu Darvish's trip to the US was not just to check out Texas, but to also undergo a medical examination (they quote an unnamed MLB source). Since negotiations will most likely go down to the wire, Sponichi is guessing that Darvish wanted to get the examination out of the way so that he can focus on his training. It should also be noted that Sponichi is uncertain if the examination results will be accepted by the Texas Rangers.
The report also mentions that Darvish is currently in Dallas, TX. A separate Sponichi article notes that Darvish is continuing his workouts in the US.
UPDATE @ 12:22pm - Nikkan Sports reports that the Arn Tellem, Don Nomura, and Rangers' GM John Daniels met for a few hours at the team offices on Tuesday. Darvish did not attend.
The Rangers have until 1/18 at 5pm (or 1/19 at 7am) to work out a deal.
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has also posted an update on Darvish's visit. A snip:
Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish and his father are in Arlington on Tuesday on what Rangers officials confirmed was nothing more than a "visit."
The trip was described as part of the process to see the Ballpark in Arlington, the surrounding area and meet with some Rangers. Club president Nolan Ryan, manager Ron Washington and general manager Jon Daniels are all expected to be a part of the welcoming committee.
The Rangers issued a statement Tuesday morning concerning Darvish's visit this week, emphasizing that the club will not release details of the visit or make any further comment during the negotiation process.
