Chunichi Dragons

Masahiro Yamamoto does not think that the opening day job will automatically be his just because Morimichi Takagi said so.  But he is using Takagi's confidence in him to push himself harder during his workouts.

"If I take a step back and think about Takagi's words, they provide me with inspiration.  After all, we already have an ace on our staff.  I will not take things too seriously and just do what I have to do.  If I am feeling good, I will do my best.  I plan to be ready by the time we play our first exhibition game in Nagoya," said Yamamoto.

It should also be noted that Yamamoto thought Takagi was joking at first.

In terms of where he is with his throwing: he has not tossed a bullpen session, but was able to play catch off an incline while wearing cleats without any problems.

Yakult Swallows

1st round draft pick Ryuhei Kawakami had a chance to introduce himself to Kazuhiro Hatakeyama during practices on Monday.

2nd round draft pick Ryohei Kiya tossed about 20 pitches during a bullpen session today (standing catch, only fastballs) under the watchful eye of Junji Ogawa.

Hiroshima Carp

Ikusei 1st round draft pick Kohei Tsukada threw 30 pitches (all fastballs) in the bullpen today.

Takayuki Oshima tossed about 30 pitches in the bullpen on Monday (standing catcher).  Oshima has been working on a new sidearm type delivery since last fall.

Yoshiyuki Ishihara showed up to joint practices on Monday with minor burns on his face from the Goma meditation he participated in over a three day stretch beginning on 1/12.  Ishihara has attended Goma meditations five years in a row.

Yokohama Bay Stars

Kishiyoshi Nakahata and head coach Yutaka Takagi met Yoshinobu Takahashi (YOM) while visiting Okinawa Cellular Stadium Naha on Monday.

Nakahata also spent some time checking the Okinawa Cellular facilities -- they are scheduled to play an exhibition game there on 2/25.

A gathering to celebrate Nakahata's start as Yokohama manager took place in Tokyo today.  About 1,400 people attended, including Shigeo Nagashima and Hideki Matsui.

“…It should also be noted that Yamamoto thought Takagi was joking at first.”

As did most of the rational baseball world.
