Chiba Lotte Marines: January 23, 2012

by on Jan.23, 2012 @ 11:54 pm, under NPB

Yoshihisa Naruse worked out at QVC Marine Field today (fielding practice, running) and told reporters he has his sights set on earning his third straight opening day start.

Shingo Ono shot the starter's pistol for the Family/High School Section at the 36th Sanspo Chiba Marathon on Sunday.

The first three spots in the starting rotation are likely set with Naruse, Yuki Karakawa, and Shunsuke Watanabe.  Pitchers like Ono, Tomohisa Otani, Hiroki Ueno, Hayden Penn, Seth Greisinger, and 1st round draft pick 1st round draft pick Takahiro Fujioka will probably compete for the remaining spots.

1st round draft pick Fujioka wants to throw 111 pitches in the bullpen on the first day of spring camp (assuming he is feeling good on the mound).

3rd round draft pick Daichi Suzuki wants to become a multi-position player like the late Takuya Kimura.

Definitely Naruse/Karakawa at the top of the rotation and Shunsuke will be in the rotation (but I don’t think as #3).

I don’t think Ono will be in the rotation at all – he seemed to fit better in the middle reliever role last year.

My guess for the other three spots (at the start of the season) would be Ueno, Penn, and Ohtani, in that order, with the possibility of Fujioka squeezing in the 6th spot instead. I think Ueno will be the #3 starter – he looked damn impressive last year despite his stats.
