Nikkan Sports round up for practices on Saturday:

  • Norichika Aoki's workouts included batting practice and fielding practice.
  • Yu Darvish threw twenty pitches in the bullpen and twenty-two pitches during batting practice against minor league players.
  • Hiroki Kuroda threw forty-nine pitches in the bullpen.
  • Tsuyoshi Nishioka's day including bunt practices.

Hideki Matsui started workouts in New York on Thursday.  On Friday, he took 262 swings during batting practice using a one kilogram training bat.

His schedule on Friday: hit the gym in the morning, batting practice from around 10:30am, break for lunch at noon, and back the the gym after lunch.

Baseball analysts Isao Harimoto and Katsumi Hirosawa made a couple of comments on Ichiro Suzuki's new batting stance during TBS' Sunday Morning TV program.

Harimoto: Having to change your stance at that age can overwhelming and difficult.  But he probably felt he had to now that he is batting third and needs to show a little more power.

Hirosawa: That stance is steady but will not generate bat speed.  It can help with contact, but I wonder which is really better...

Hiroki Kuroda threw forty-nine pitches in the bullpen on Saturday.  It was his third bullpen session.  He is scheduled to toss batting practice on February 27.

===

Hisanori Takahashi threw fifty-two pitches in the bullpen on Saturday.  Partway through the session, he pitched with the assumption that he was facing a left-handed batter.  This was his third bullpen session.

===

Tsuyoshi Nishioka started his day on Saturday with bunt practices.  During live batting practice, he saw ten pitches and swung the bat once.  And during fielding practice, he worked on his approach to second base.

===

Yu Darvish threw twenty pitches in the bullpen before his batting practice outing.  He threw twenty-two pitches against minor league hitters during batting practice and just one baseball made it to the outfield on a fly.  The hitters apparently said Darvish' pitches had "crazy action" on them.

On Friday, Darvish managed to bunt six of eight pitches between first and second.

Minivish (Darvish look-a-like) visited the Texas Rangers facilities on Friday.

===

Hisashi Iwakuma threw fifty pitches in the bullpen on Saturday.  Iwakuma is scheduled to pitch in an intra-squad game on February 28.

===

Tsuyoshi Wada's workouts on Saturday lasted about two hours and included fielding practice and various training exercises.  He also did some running afterwards.  Wada is scheduled to toss batting practice on February 26.

===

Norichika Aoki's nickname is apparently "ninja."  After taking thirty-three swings during batting practice on Saturday, Aoki was seen moving into the next group for more work.

Aoki also told reporters that he is intent on playing center and that he will be using a Japanese Ash bat this season (he was using a maple bat the last two years).

Nikkan Sports mentions that former Yakult Swallow, Aaron Guiel, will be a player/coach in the Kansas City Royals' minor league system.
