Nikkan Sports round up for practices on Thursday:

  • Norichika Aoki took about fifty swings during batting practice.  He also stayed back after general workouts for extra soft-toss batting practice.
  • Yu Darvish did not pitch and kept workouts light.  He is scheduled to throw during an intra-squad game on Friday.
  • The Seattle Mariners had the day off.
  • Hiroki Kuroda tossing batting practice.
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka threw thirty-six pitch, including off-speed pitches, during a bullpen session.

Hiroki Kuroda worked on signs with the catcher while tossing thirty-five pitches to two batters during batting practice on Thursday.

Daisuke Matsuzaka threw thirty-six pitches in the bullpen on Thursday and told reporters that he was used to throwing the ball and he no longer felt worried about his arm.  The bullpen was also done with situations that called for change of speeds and pitch types.

Yoshinori Tateyama gave up a homer to Josh Hamilton during batting practice on Wednesday.  He also broke Nelson Cruz's bat.  He is scheduled to pitch in Friday's intra-squad game, as is Koji Uehara (one inning each).

According to Nikkan Sports: Ryota Igarashi used to rely on the fork, but struggled with the pitch after heading to the US.  He was advised to pick up a slider when he played for the New York Mets and has finally managed to get comfortable with it.  The Nikkan Sports article includes the following quote from Rod Barajas, a catcher that knows Igarashi from 2010: "Igarashi can work the count with the fastball and slider and turn to the curve to mess with timing. He is a lot easier to catch now."

Sponichi figures Munenori Kawasaki could make his debut at third if Chone Figgins needs to spend some time in center because of Franklin Gutierrez's injury.

===

Norichika Aoki took eleven swings against Yovani Gallardo during batting practice on Thursday.

===

Tsuyoshi Wada played catch for the first time in five days on Thursday.  The session lasted about ten minutes and at a distance between fifteen to thirty meters.  Wada will play catch again on Friday and depending on how things go, he could be cleared to toss a bullpen session as early as Sunday.

Yu Darvish's workouts on Thursday lasted about two hours and included infield drills and running.  He also played catch at various distances while throwing the ball at different speeds.  He threw the ball about sixty times.

During batting practice on Wednesday, Darvish shook off the catcher five times in a row at one point.  During the session, he threw the fastball, cutter, slider, curve, splitter, change, and two-seamer.  The shake off occurred on the thirty-third pitch because Darvish wanted to throw the splitter.

Darvish is scheduled to pitch one inning during an intra-squad game on Friday.

Tomochika Tsuboi visited the Texas Rangers' facilities in Surprise, AZ on Wednesday.
