Opening Series News and Notes: March 26, 2012

by on Mar.26, 2012 @ 4:57 am, under MLB, NPB

The difference an Ichiro can make...

Mariners vs Hanshin attendance: 42,137

Oakland vs Yomiuri attendance: 26,252

It will be interested to see if the numbers change any with the four teams switching up opponents today.

The SF Chronicle's Susan Slusser mentions that pitchers are using baseballs from their respective leagues during the exhibition games:

Japanese baseballs are slightly smaller and harder than major-league baseballs; in the exhibition games, the Yomiuri and Hanshin pitchers will throw Mizuno-made Japanese balls, and the A's pitchers will throw standard Rawlings baseballs.

I don’t think comparing the attendance with today’s game is relevant (The Athletics – Tigers game is on a weekday at 12:00, you can’t expect to have a big attendance…)

Indeed. I spaced on that. But I still think it will be interesting to see how many fans come out to watch the Seattle – Giants game tonight.

Incidentally, and perhaps this goes without saying, but the MLB was smart for making the ticket prices high for the Seattle games.

If there is one thing Americans are good at it is squeezing as much money as possible out of a consumer. At least they didn’t kill anybody in this case.

Balls they can change, but the mound was completely rebuilt as a standard MLB one, which is a lot harder than a standard NPB one.
