The Carp announced today that Kenta Kurihara will go under the knife at a hospital in Tatebayashi, Gunma on May 9. Kurihara was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his right elbow.
UPDATE @ 9:02pm - Team owner Hajima Matsuda told reporters today that he did not expect Kurihara to return this season.
UPDATE 5/1 @ 1:10pm - A team rep told reporters that Kurihara might be able to start a throwing program as early as three months, and at worst, five to six months, after his surgery. And the team's chief trainer said that the Carp will make an announcement of his recovery timetable after the surgery.
