Hideki Matsui (TBR) started his workouts at Port Charlotte on Wednesday. Matsui showed up at around 9am wearing shorts and a t-shirt. His next stop after Port Charlotte is Triple-A Durham. Nikkan Sports mentions that Matsui could make it back to the Majors as early as May 16.
And Sanspo is carrying the following Q&A with Matsui, taken on his first day of workouts on Wednesday:
Your thoughts on the first day of practices.
It has been a while. It felt great.
Florida is warm.
I like the warm weather. I think workouts went well.
There are a lot of young players here.
This is fun too.
You took batting practice on the field for the first time in a while.
It has been a while so I had a hard time getting my timing down. I will make the necessary adjustments.
You wore the team cap and clothes during practices.
It feels different practicing with other players.
How much work would you like to do here before moving on to Triple-A?
I am not really thinking about that. That is something the team will decide. But they might ask me for some input.
Do you want to play right away?
Either way is fine. The team has its own plans so I want to go along with that.
Any differences between workouts at the Major league level and the minor league level?
No big differences. Maybe not wearing uniforms during practices.
The Japanese fans are looking forward [to seeing you play].
I think there are fans that are looking forward [to seeing me play]. I would like to try to show them something.
Any plans to play in games tomorrow, or the day after?
I have not thought about that.
