Craig Brazell (HAN): Tie games are about as good as kissing your sister

by on May.31, 2012 @ 11:53 pm, under NPB

Chiba Lotte Marines vs Hanshin Tigers at Koshien Stadium on Thursday night.

Bottom of the 9th, runners on second and third and one out.

Craig Brazell up to bat for Hanshin.

Yasuhiko Yabuta on the mound for Lotte.

Brazell grounds a 1-2 change through the right side for a walk-off single.

Also got a little kick out of this quote by Brazell on tie games and baseball (taken from the hero interview above):

"It definitely is.  You don't wanna tie.  Uh, there's no ties in baseball.  I mean, you play the game to win and you don't play the game to tie.  Uh, I guess tying is about as good as kissing your sister."

Adventures in Translation. Common enough idiom in English, but the poor interpreter almost had an aneurysm. ;)

Watching the game last night with the wife…. She looked me and I at her when he said that! We were waiting to see if the translator would even try to translate that.
But Brazell is right…. There should be no ties in baseball.

Have they ever refused ties in Japanese professional baseball? Yes, when the military was in power in the 40s. Reason? “Fight until the end!”
