Tetsuya Utsumi was responsible for tossing the shutout.  It was the eight shutout of his career.  It also gave him at least one shutout in each of his last seven consecutive seasons, which is tops in franchise history for a left-handed pitcher (the previous high of six was set by Yoshiaki Ito between 1959 and 1964).

The last Yomiuri pitcher to record at least one shutout over at least seven consecutive seasons: Hiromi Makihara, eight seasons between 1991 and 1998.
