Hanshin Tigers

With the Tigers up 5-4 and runners on second and third and no out in the bottom of the 5th against the Yomiuri Giants on Saturday, the defense was supposed concede the run and get the sure out at first on any ground ball hit to the infield.  Shuichi Murata (Yomiuri) proceeded to hit a grounder to Keiichi Hirano.  The throw should have gone to first, but instead went to home.  Off line.  And hit Yoshitomo Tani (Yomiuri).  And rolled toward the dugout.  Two unearned runs scored and Murata ended up on second.

INF/base-running coach Teruyoshi Kuji on the play: "We were willing to give up the run.  I am sure [Hirano] felt he could get the out at home, but if you are going to go there, you better throw a strike.  If you can not make the plays the coaches are calling for, then there is no need for us to make those decisions!  It cost us two runs!  That was the biggest reason [we lost].  He has made a lot of good plays for us, but that one play..."

And Yutaka Wada: "There is something that is making us rush because we have not been able to win.  We positioned ourselves on the field to concede the run.  I am sure [Hirano] wanted to do something to prevent the run, but it was not something we called."

Matt Murton was close to getting ejected from Saturday's game.  After he struck out looking in the second inning, he mumbled something to home plate umpire Masato Tomoyose.

Said Tomoyose, "[Murton] was close to arguing the call.  When I asked him to repeat what he said, he did not so I did not toss him."
