Masahiro Tanaka recorded his 1,000th career strikeout during today's game against the Seibu Lions.
Coming into today's game, Tanaka sat on 995 strikeouts. He recorded four strikeouts through the first 4.2 innings of work and proceed to his 1,000th strikeout when he got Takumi Kuriyama to swing out on a 151km/h fastball up and away (in the zone).
Tanaka is the 131st pitcher in NPB history to reach the milestone. At twenty-three and nine months, he is the seventh youngest pitcher and at 1,042 innings, the sixth quickest to 1,000 strikeouts.
The NPB record youngest pitcher is Masaichi Kaneda at twenty years and eleven months. The NPB record for quickest is Hideo Nomo at 871 innings.
Tanaka recorded his first strikeout on March 29, 2007 (Hitoshi Tamura).
The Eagles have already announced that they will be selling a limited edition commemorative plaque. Orders will be accepted between August 23 and September 2. A total 1,000 plaques will be available at 10,000 yen a piece. More information can be found at the official team site.
