Sho Nakata was watching a video of players that have hit three hundred or more home runs and noticed that many of them did not wear batting gloves.  He reportedly asked around for why players might do that.  When trying it out himself, during batting practice and during games, he found he was able to identify when he was swinging the bat well based on how much, or little, his hands hurt after making contact with the ball.  Source: Nikkan Sports 8/19/2012
