  • Sho Nakata plans to lend him whatever support he needs.
  • If he decides to sign with the Fighters, he will probably contact MLB teams first, before making an official announcement.

Speaking at a fan event, Masaru Takeda (Nippon Ham) said he was ready to provide Otani with whatever support he needs.  He also said that he wanted to get some hitting tips from the youngster.  Source: Nikkan Sports 12/3/2012

This will be the sixth time the Fighters meet with either Otani, Otani's parents, or his manager.  There are apparently two or three things he wants to confirm.  The Fighters feel they should have a better idea of what he wants to do after their meeting with him today.  Source: Sponichi 12/3/2012

Yusei Kikuchi (Seibu) on Otani: "I think he will be satisfied if he is the one making the decision.  I am watching as a fan and will cheer for him wherever he goes."  Source: Sponichi 12/3/2012

Sports Hochi:

  • The Fighters reportedly checked on the availability of Sapporo Dome on the 9th.  They may be making preparations for a press conference, in case Otani decides to sign.
  • If Otani wants it, they will give him the number eleven (Yu Darvish's old number).
  • Nippon Ham will likely offer Otani the max amount of money: 15M yen contract, 100M yen bonus, 50M yen in incentives.  Incidentally, that comes out to about two million US dollars.

Tokyo Sports:

Quote from someone close to Hanamaki Higashi High School:

No matter how much [Ontani] might say he wants to play in the Majors, there is no way a kind/thoughtful Iwate child is going to go against their parents and head overseas.  Everyone was hoping this would happen if he met [Hideki] Kuriyama. ... The question is what the adults can do to allow him to join the Fighters with minimal harm.

Otani is already reportedly receiving some flak from people around his high school and his family for softening his stance.
