Yuki Saito will likely have fewer chances to make the starting rotation with the addition of Hiroshi Kisanuki.

The first five spots in the starting rotation will likely go to Mitsuo YoshikawaMasaru TakedaBobby KeppelBrian Wolfe, and Kisanuki.  That means Saito will likely have compete with pitchers like Masaru Nakamura and Keisuke Tanimoto for the final spot.

"If you think about it, the starting rotation is more or less set.  Saito will not have a lot of chances," said Hideki Kuriyama.  "[Kisanuki] can eat innings.  He is stable and can pitch a full season.  It would be good if he can pitch somewhere in the middle of the rotation."

2012 Draft Class

Kensuke Kondo caught 1st round draft pick Shohei Otani's bullpen session on Thursday and said that he thought the youngster topped out at about 145km/h.  Of the thirty-one pitches he threw, seven were curves.  Otani's next session could be to a squatting catcher.

Otani threw nineteen pitches from the set position; ten from the no-wind; and went back to the set position for the last two.

Otani also took sixty-two swings during bating practice after his bullpen session on Thursday -- eleven were soft-toss and fifty-one were against a live arm/pitching machine (eighteen could-be hits).

Otani is scheduled to toss another bullpen on the 27th.

The Fighters are planning to place a limit how often Otani can step away from the team during spring camp.

"We will not allow him to go out for food.  If he wants to leave, he will have to get permission. We will set some rules," said Kuriyama.

Sports Hochi has posted Otani's talk with media on Thursday.

You tossed your first first pro bullpen.

It had been a while.  I had a lot of fun today.  I was able to pitch at my own pace.

How was the session?

I was able to get a good grip on about half the pitches.  I want to try and diminish the difference between times I am throwing well and times I am throwing poorly.

And your fastball?

I cannot get into unless there is someone standing in the batter's box.

Kondo said that your curve reminded him of Yoshikawa's.

I am happy to be compared to a great pitcher like that.  I try to take advantage of my height when I throw.

Do you feel any stain after doing workouts for both pitchers and hitters?

If the training is like this, then it is about the same as I did in high school so I am fine.

  1. Ed

He has shoulder pain so I think he will start the season in Ni-Gun. But he has a lot of fans so, they will bring him up as soon as they think he can handle it.

Looks like a labrum injury. If he undergoes surgery, it will a serious blow to his pro career.
