2012 Draft Class
Hideki Kuriyama on 1st round draft pick Shohei Otani going out during spring camp: "This is not so much about placing limitations, but rather making sure he can focus on what is at hand. We will not let him go out. He will be playing two [positions] so there are things he has to do. I can not tell him never to go out, but if he is going to go out, he will have to get permission from me. He needs to tell me where he is going and with whom. ... There have been issues [in the past] with smoking. There are things we need to teach players while they are young. They need to be patient when necessary. They can not let down the fans."
Otani's thoughts on Kuriyama's plans: "They said that they wanted me to focus on baseball. I will be playing two positions, so I think I need to practice. The manager has a responsibility as well. I can feel that they really want me to work hard. If I do not go out, then I can not get into trouble. There is some good from placing limits. ... My high school had a rule that banned karaoke and arcade centers. ... We were allowed to go out between 4:30pm and 7:00pm. When I stepped out, it was just to go shopping. ... I was living under similar conditions, so it is not a big deal."
Otani wants to become a hitter like Atsunori Inaba and pitcher like Yu Darvish.
