“Our pitchers did well outside of that one pitch to [Ryoji] Aikawa. Our offense is better than Japan’s. We’re about the same on defense. I think we can beat Japan [if we face them at the WBC]. … I have been watching [Masahiro Tanaka] for about four or five years. I knew what was coming before he threw the ball.”

Well I guess he won’t be telling the same story after that game.

Tanaka didn’t have much movement on his pitches in that game. If the manager thinks get he got 2 runs off of him because he “knew what was coming” instead of it being February he’s an idiot.

Did he really say “our offense is better than Japan”? and what is his definition about “about the same” for defense? those guys were kicking the ball around all over the place when it was hit to them and throwing wildly to first and on steal attempts. Nice effort, but the skill level is not even close.

That actually should have read: “Our offense WAS better than Japan’s.”

(Quote has been fixed on the original post)

Oh ok that makes more sense now. For the game on Saturday, their offense *was* better than Japan’s. Also, dont get me wrong I am concerned about Japan’s offense too once the real WBC starts.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the original quote was in English. I read the Japanese quote and translated that back to English. There’s a good chance something got lost somewhere along the way.

I’d be interested in knowing the actual English quote.
