Nippon Ham Fighters

Pre-game workouts before Friday's Kyoiku League game against Seibu at Seibu 2 Stadium had to be cut short because the team bus got stuck in traffic and arrived about twenty-three minutes later than planned.  1st round draft pick Shohei Otani threw twenty-eight pitches in the bullpen and only had enough time for some soft-toss batting practice before the start of the game.

Otani took twenty-three swings against a batting practice pitcher during workouts today and hit two over the fence.  Otani is scheduled to pitch two innings in relief on Sunday.

GAORA has decided to broadcast Sunday's Kyoiku League game (12:00 to 16:00).  This will be the first time the channel provides live coverage of a Kyoiku League game.

Hideki Kuriyama hinted that Otani might be ready to face Hanshin Tigers' 1st round draft pick Shintaro Fujinami during Inter-league play this year.

Otani will most likely have a chance to play in an Ichi-gun exhibition game between the 21st (Rakuten at Tokyo Dome) and 24th (Yakult at Sapporo Dome).

Seibu Lions

Kyohei Nagae was struggling at the plate until Jose Ortiz suggested that he stay back on pitches more and worry about running after making contact.

The Lions are scheduled to meet 2nd round draft pick Makoto Auichi for contract negotiations at Seibu Dome on Sunday.  The two sides have until the end of the month to work out a deal.

Softbank Hawks

The "WBC mounds" at YafuOku Dome were supposed to be redone after an exhibition game against Lotte on Sunday, but may end up remaining as is after a number of pitchers said the changes were not necessary.  Team officials are exploring different options.  If the mounds are redone, construction will begin next week.

Rakuten Eagles

Senichi Hoshino stood in the batter's box during the ceremonial first pitch before today's exhibition game against Yakult and hit the ball foul into the Yakult dugout.  Source: Nikkan Sports 3/9/2013

Hoshino told reporters that he might give 1st round draft pick Yudai Mori a chance to pitch at Ichi-gun some time before the summer.

Chiba Lotte Marines

Tsutomu Ito told reporters that while Naoya Masuda still needed to pitch in a few more games, he still considered him the closer.

Tomoya Satozaki missed today's exhibition game against Softbank because of tightness in his right shoulder.  He is day-to-day.

Orix Buffaloes

There is a chance Chihiro Kaneko may not be ready for opening day and may require additional time for rehab (right elbow).  Kaneko has yet to toss a bullpen session and is still only playing catch at a distance of about fifty meters.

Pitching coach Takashi Nishimoto spoke to reporters about Kaneko today and said, "There are steps [Kaneko has to climb].  He will not suddenly be called up to pitch in a game."

On Friday, the team lost its sixth straight game since the start of exhibition play.  The last team to get off to such a bad start was Yokohama in 2010.  The Buffaloes managed to snap the losing streak today with a 1-0 victory over Yomiuri.

This really has nothing to do with this post, but I wanted to see if anyone could answer this. I have been looking at the Nippon Ham Fighters website since December and have yet to see any of those T-shirts that look like jerseys for the new young players. No Yoshikawa, Otani, Nakamura… I’m very surprised that after a stellar season last year and the hype around Otani, Yoshikawa and Otani don’t have anything available. I remember the Yuki Saito one being offered just days after he officially announced he was playing for Hokkaido… I don’t know, just strikes me as odd.
