Chunichi Dragons

Kazuki Yoshimi, Kenichi Nakata, Soma Yamauchi, and Masahiro Yamamoto are likely the only pitchers that have a spot in the starting rotation right now.  While there are a number of candidates to fill the final two spots, like Yudai Ono, Junki Ito, Shinji Iwata, and Kentaro Nishikawa, none have managed to impress Morimichi Takagi.

Shingo Kawabata suffered a back strain during the first block of spring camp in February.  He was also coming back from a left ankle injury from fall camp last year.   He played in his first rehab game on Sunday -- Kyoiku League game against Nippon Ham at Kamagaya.  He started at third, batted lead-off, and hit an infield single in the 4th.

The players raised enough money through a charity auction they held in February to donate 2,814,985 yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society.  The money will go toward northern Japan reconstruction/revitalization efforts.

2nd round draft pick Fumiya Hojo probably will not get another chance to play in an Ichi-gun exhibition game -- Sunday was apparently his one and only shot.

Hojo will report to Ni-gun on Tuesday.

Takahiro Arai joined the main Ni-gun group for batting practice on Sunday and could play in a Kyoiku League rehab game vs Chunichi at Nagoya as early as the 15th.  Arai took twenty-eight swings against a live arm and nineteen against a machine.  With his forty-seven swings, he hit four over the fence (all to left).  He also took grounders at first.

If things go well, Arai could play in an exhibition game against Orix at Kyocera Dome on the 22nd.

When he does play in his first game, it will probably be as a DH.
