[3/15/2013] Nippon Ham, Seibu, Rakuten, Lotte, Orix

Nippon Ham Fighters

Masaru Takeda could get four "opening day" starts this year: he started the first exhibition game of the year on February 23, will likely start the first regular season Ni-gun game of the year on the 16th, will start the Ichi-gun season opener on the 29th, and could get the home opener on April 5.

Takeda is scheduled to toss two innings on the 16th and start an exhibition game against Rakuten on the 21st before the season opener on the 29th.

1st round draft pick Shohei Otani participated in Ichi-gun workouts at Kamagaya today.  He threw sixty-seven pitches in the bullpen and hit one over the fence during batting practice.  Otani is scheduled to play in Saturday's exhibition game against Orix as a position player.

Seibu Lions

3rd round draft pick Yuji Kaneko has spent most of his time playing second and third during pre-season games.  Esteban German will now begin working out at third.  The team wants to continue using Kaneko and will give him a chance to play the outfield.

Rakuten Eagles

The Eagles played a practice game against Hiroshima today.  The offense was shutout and limited to just three hits.  Brandon Duckworth started the game and tossed six shutout innings.  Jim Heuser entered the game in the 8th and allowed a run on two hits over an inning of work.

Chiba Lotte Marines

Yuta Kimura (1.1 IP, 4 ER) and Takuya Furuya (2.0 IP, 5 ER) were demoted after today's exhibition game against Softbank.  Pitching coach Akio Saito had told both pitchers this would be their last chance to prove that they belonged in the opening day starting rotation.

Hiroshi Moriwaki wants his pitchers to be more aggressive inside the strike zone -- through the team's first nine exhibition games: thirty-six walks/HBPs.

Takahiro Mahara (brachial plexus neuritis) started his rehab at the Saitozaki training facilities on Thursday.  His workouts are currently limited to lower body exercises, like riding a stationary bike or using the pool.  He will not be able to throw the ball for a little while.
