Nippon Ham Fighters

There is a good chance Naoki Miyanishi will not be ready for opening day because of his left shoulder.  He threw forty-six pitches in the bullpen to a standing catcher on Thursday but still needs to toss a bullpen session with a squatting catcher and pitch in a Ni-gun rehab game before he can return to the Ichi-gun team.

Otani was so excited about his day went on Thursday that he could not fall asleep until around 2:00am.

Otani could pitch and bat third or forth in a regular season game against Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome on either June 5 or 6.

"If [Otani] can bat third, then he could bat third and pitch.  It would be ideal if he could pitch during Inter-league play.  When we play Yomiuri here [at Tokyo Dome] maybe he could bat fifth and pitch.  We have Sho [Nakata] at four already," said Hideki Kuriyama to reporters on Thursday.

Otani could pitch in a Ni-gun game against Seibu at Kamagaya on either the 26th or 27th.

Otani did not take pre-game batting practice on Thursday.  During the game, he waited in the bullpen until he was called in to pitch the top of the 8th.  He did not have time to ice his arm since he was the second batter in the bottom of the 8th.  He took over in right in the top of the 9th.

Otani will remain with the team through to at least the last exhibition game on the 24th (vs Yakult at Sapporo Dome).

Softbank Hawks

Hayato Terahara threw about forty pitches to a standing catcher in the bullpen today.  Terahara is still having problems with his back.

"I am not 100%," said Terahara.  "This is not how I pitch.  To be honest, I am compensating while I throw."

There is a good chance he will not be ready for the start of the regular season.

Nobuhiro Matsuda is testing a pair of glasses with yellow lenses while running the bases.  He used them during Thursday's exhibition game against Lotte.

"It is a new peice of equipment.  It should stop [excessive] blinking.  It is for my dry eyes.  It allows me to focus by keeping wind out of my eyes," said Matsuda.

The rotation could end up being: Masahiro Tanaka, Brandon Duckworth, 2nd round draft pick Takahiro Norimoto, Yoshinao Kamata, Manabu Mima, and finally Yasunori Kikuchi.

Wataru Karashima was dropped from the rotation because of concerns bout his left elbow -- tests conducted on Thursday did come back negative, but the team is still apparently taking precautions.
