Some starting pitchers are allowed to leave games before they end if they are not scheduled to pitch that day.  The coaches are not planning to extend the rule to 1st round draft pick Shohei Otani if/when he becomes a starter.

Otani got the day off on Monday.  He tossed a bullpen session today and will pitch about three innings (thirty to fifty pitches) in a Ni-gun game against Seibu at Kamagaya on Wednesday.

Otani threw thirty-five pitches in the bullpen today (with a focus on the slider and curve).  He was originally scheduled to play in today's Ni-gun game against Seibu as a position play, but was scratched to give him time to focus on his workouts as a pitcher.

2nd round draft pick Takahiro Norimoto is slated to become the first rookie to start an opening day game in franchise history.  Only twelve rookies have started opening day games in league history.  The last was Hikaru Takano in 1984 for Yakult.

The currently rotation likely includes: Masahiro Tanaka, Yoshinao Kamata, Manabu Mima, Norimoto, Kenji Tomura, and Brandon Duckworth.

Duckworth was an opening day candidate, but Senichi Hoshino may have decided to go with Norimoto out of consideration for the team's future.

The Marines do not want Seth Greisinger (right shoulder) to rush himself back and are fine if it takes him a month or two.  The last thing they want is for him to aggravate the injury by trying to do too much.  He will begin the year at Ni-gun.
