1st round draft pick Shohei Otani is the ninth rookie out of high school to record a hit on opening day and first since Ginjiro Sumitani in 2006.  He is also the second rookie to record two hits (Kunimitsu Yanouchi in 1960); third to record a timely hit (Takao Kajimoto in 1954 and Yanouchi in 1960); and fourth to record an extra base hit (Futoshi Nakanishi in 1952, Tatsuhiko Fukazawa in 1953, and Kazuyoshi Tatsunami in 1988).

Yuichi Honda's opening day grand slam on Friday...

...was the NPBs twentieth opening day grand slam (eighth in the PL), first since Julio Zuleta in 2007.
...was the NPBs third opening day grand slam for a player that had zero home runs during the previous season (Masato Monzen in Fall 1938 and Kozaburo Matsumoto in 1941).
...was the franchise's fifth opening day grand slam, first since Kevin Mitchell in 1995.
...was the eleventh for a player that had zero career grand slams over their career, first since Takayuki Shimizu in 2001.

The home run was also Honda's first since July 17, 2010.

2nd round draft pick Takahiro Norimoto became the thirteenth rookie in league history, fifth in PL history, to start an opening day game.  Of the twelve players from the past, seven recorded victories.  Two, Keiji Narita (1950) and Kunio Jonouchi (1962), took losses and three were not involved in the final decision.
