[4/8/2013] Yomiuri, Chunichi, Yakult, Hiroshima

Yomiuri Giants

The Giants tend to win games at Tokyo Dome when Shinnosuke Abe goes yard.

Since a loss on July 2, 2010, they have gone: 8-0 in 2010, 11-0-1 in 2011, 11-0-1 in 2012, and are 1-0-2 so far in 2013.

Chunichi Dragons

Morimichi Takagi worked with Naomichi Donoue during batting practice today.  He had Donoue take cuts with a metal bat against a pitching machine that was placed at about half the usual distance.

Takagi was planning to send Kenichi Nakata to pinch-hit for Shinji Tajima in the top of the 9th inning of Sunday's game against Yomiuri because he burned through his bench and had no one better to turn to.  As fortune would have it, Masahiko Morino, Kohei Oda, and N. Donoue failed to keep the inning going after taking turns at the plate with the bases loaded.

It should be noted that Donoue may have been able to tie the game at eight (or perhaps even turn the tables), if not for a great diving catch by Tetsuya Matsumoto to end the game.

Yakult Swallows

Orlando Roman is slated to start a game against Yomiuri at Tokyo Dome on the 12th.  Roman accidentally shaved his hair down really short (he made a mistake with the blade setting on his clippers).

The eight home runs Yakult and Yokohama hit on Sunday set a new post-standard baseball high.

Akinori IwamuraShinichi Takeuchi, and Yuhei Nakamura became the first trio of players in NPB history to record their first home runs of the season in successive at bats.

Additionally, this was the third time in NPB history in which one team hit home runs in three or more successive at bats while the other had one player hit three home runs.  The other two: Lotte vs Toei on May 3, 1975 (Lotte's Shinichi Eto hit three home runs and five Toei hitters) and Kintetsu vs Lotte on October 3, 1980 (Kintetsu's Koichi Hada hit three home runs and three Lotte hitters).

Hiroshima Carp

Yoshihiro Maru leads the NPB with three modashos (as of Sunday).

Kenta Maeda is throwing a faster slider since the WBC.

"I am throwing [the slider] like I usually do.  My fastball has been good since the WBC.  That might be the cause," said Maeda.  "My [current] arm action could be affecting the slider [as well].  It has good velocity.  I am liking it."

He added, "I do not know if it is because I am using a different ball now, but my arm is getting tired more quickly that usual.  But I should be fine once I get used to it."

Great game on Sunday between Chunichi and Yomiuri. Lots of base runners, homers and drama. Pretty intense for an April game and one helluva catch by Matsumoto to end it!

I was there. Wish it could have ended differently but it was an exciting game nonetheless. Here’s hoping Clark gets more chances to show what he can do.

The fact that Takagi sent Morino out to play second base in that game suggests the Clark has probably won the job.
