Yomiuri Giants

Hirokazu Sawamura could be sent down to Ni-gun if he continues to struggle in his next outing.  On Thursday, he made his first start since his divorce announcement on the 13th and gave up four runs (all earned) on four hits over three innings of work.

Sawamura has stopped three five-game or more winning streaks over his career: a ten-game winning streak on May 26, 2012 (vs Lotte); a six-game winning streak on July 31, 2012 (vs Chunichi); and a five-game winning streak on Thursday, April 18, 2013 (vs Hanshin).  He also ended two ten-game or more winning streaks at Tokyo Dome: eleven-game losing streak on July 31, 2012 (vs Chunichi); and a ten-game losing streak on Thursday, April 18, 2013 (vs Hanshin).

Yoshiyuki Kamei played in a Ni-gun game against Seibu today.  He was the starting DH and batted fifth.  He went 0-for-2: fly out to center, fly out to right.  Kamei is working his way back from a left calf strain he suffered during spring camp.

Yoshinobu Takahashi's (left calf strain) workouts on Thursday included playing catch at distance of about forty meters and soft-toss batting practice.

The Carp will commemorate their walk-off victory on Thursday night with a limited number of Brad Eldred Sayonara t-shirts (200 t-shirts, 3,000 yen a piece, in sizes M, L, O).

Hanshin Tigers

1st round draft pick Shintaro Fujinami threw about fifty pitches in the bullpen at Tokyo Dome on Thursday.

As of Thursday night, Brooks Conrad has gone fifty-eight consecutive trips to the plate without an RBI.  That is a franchise high for first-year foreign players.

The Tigers started selling a limited number of Nomi-san Aishiteru t-shirts on the 14th (the team received permission from both Matt Murton and Atsushi Nomi) and have apparently already sold out.  The t-shirt has already hit online auctions.

No, but it’s news. And it could have an effect on his performance.

Plus, if I report on marriages in the news, then why not also report on divorces.

If it becomes a headline in Japan, then in most cases, I’ll report it, regardless of how relevant someone may or may not think it might be.]

UPDATE: Sorry, the latter part of my post doesn’t really make much sense since you weren’t commenting on the original report. You were simply pointing out that the comment about divorce doesn’t seem relevant to his performance, but the actual Japanese article mentioned it, so I simply included it.

I would say yes his divorce is news and quite possibly would affect his performance on the mound. Thus it was useful to see as it adds perspective to his performance.
