Sanspo: Fox Sports Japan interested in securing more broadcast rights for NPB games

by on Apr.24, 2013 @ 1:34 am, under NPB

According to a report by Sanspo, Fox Sports Japan (FSJ) is interested in expanding their coverage of the NPB.  The channel already broadcasts Softbank, Orix, and Lotte games through FOX BS 238.

"Based on our experiences in other regions, sports are a requirement for growth.  The most popular sport in Japan in baseball. ... We are continuing to speak to all teams, from both the Central and Pacific Leagues," said Fox Sports Japan's CEO Rik Dovey.

A couple other take-aways from the report:

  • Was at one point considering the acquisition of JSports.  They will consider options in Japan if/when they become available.
  • Is discussing the possibility of broadcasting games in Korea and Taiwan under the Fox Sports brand that involve players from the two countries.
  • Is brainstorming ideas to help increase fan interest in the NPB, like pre- and post-game shows.

I like their broadcasts quite a bit, actually. Definitely better than some of the current broadcasters (like Sky-A’s Rakuten games, ugh).
