Yomiuri Giants

Before practices on Wednesday, Shinnosuke Abe got an x-ray on the right elbow he took an HBP off on Tuesday.  He made the starting line-up on Wednesday after results came back negative and his workouts went well enough to allow him to play.  He was taken out of the game on defense in the 7th for rest.

Abe hit his 301st career home run on Wednesday and moved into sole possession of fifth on the franchise all-time list.

The Giants scored seventeen runs on twenty-one hits against Yokohama on Wednesday.  The last time they recorded twenty-one or more hits: twenty-three hits against Hiroshima on August 12, 2009.  The last time they scored seventeen or more runs: nineteen runs against Seiibu on June 12, 2005.

Nine consecutive players in the line-up scored a run in the 8th inning, beginning with Hisayoshi Chono and ending with Takayuki Terauchi. That is the fourth time in franchise history nine consecutive players recorded a run in one inning.  The other three times: ten players in the 8th inning against Yokohama on April 27, 2003; nine players in the 4th inning against Hankyu on May 11, 1941; and nine players in the 3rd inning against Hiroshima on July 6, 1975.

Masahiro Yamamoto's return has been delayed a bit: he was supposed to pitch at Ni-gun on Wednesday, but the game was rained out.  He is now scheduled to pitch during a three-game series against Ni-gun Orix that begins on the 27th.

Takuya Asao (right shoulder) tossed a bullpen session on Wednesday -- around fifty fastballs to a standing catcher.  It was the first time he threw off an incline in about two weeks.

Kenichi Matsuoka is slated to start Friday's game against Yomiuri at Jingu.  It will be his first start since October 9, 2007.

Forty-one-year-old veteran Tomonori Maeda may have hinted at retirement (or perhaps lightly jested) when he said "Thanks for all the support you gave me over the years," to Kenjiro Nomura after he found out he would miss two to three months with a fracture in his left wrist.
